Positioned amidst the range of Satpura in the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, Satpura National Park is a pristine wildlife habitat spread over an area of 524 sq. km. It was first introduced by the popular bird watcher Dr. Salim Ali in 1981. In the same year, the park covers an area of 1427 sq km by adjoining Bori Sanctuary (486 sq km) and Panchmarhi Wildlife Sanctuary(417 sq km), making a unique central Indian highland ecosystem. In 1999, the park was added to the Tiger Project Network and was declared the first Biosphere Reserve covering an area of 2133 sq km with a core area of 1339.26 sq km. Satpura also draws interest from those interested in archaeology as there are more than 50 rock shelters that are embellished with beautiful paintings. These Rock shelters are 1500-10000 years old.

En route, you’ll find the rugged landscapes commemorated with sandstone peaks, narrow gorges, ravines, and dense forests that make it an inimitable creation of nature. It’s the place that every wildlife buff must visit to enjoy the view of the jungle, lovely hilly terrains, rivulets unswayed forest, etc. Very rich in biodiversity, the wildlife of Satpura covers a huge range of flora and fauna including rare species of mammals, birds, reptiles and plants.

The park’s fauna comprises spotted deer, Indian bison, Tigers, Leopards, wild boar, Indian wild dogs or dholes, sloth bear, black buck, porcupine, sambhar, chowsingha, pangolin, marsh crocodile, langurs, etc. About 14 species of endangered mammals and reptiles are found in the Satpura Tiger Reserve. Indian giant squirrel is one of the special features of Satpura Tiger Reserve as it is rare in India now. Some of the species like Indian giant squirrels, flying squirrels, and rhesus monkeys are endemic to Central India

Bori Wildlife Sanctuary: A Hidden Gem in Satpura Tiger Reserve

Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Satpura Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, Central India, is an emerging destination for wildlife enthusiasts. This 646 sq. km sanctuary is located on the southern slopes of the Satpura range, with rustic landscapes nestled along the Tawa River. Known for its rich biodiversity and historic sites, Bori offers a less commercialized safari experience as compared to Satpura. It’s easily reachable, just 140 km from Bhopal and well-connected by road.

How to Reach Bori Wildlife Sanctuary

By Air: The nearest airport is Bhopal (160 km), followed by Nagpur (240 km). Both offer excellent flight connectivity, with onward road transfers available by tourist cabs.

From Satpura National Park, Madhai – 110 Km

With its serene landscapes and growing popularity, Bori is fast becoming a favourite among wildlife lovers seeking a tranquil and authentic safari experience in Central India.

Safaris at Satpura National Park

Regular Jeep Safaris: Regular Jeep Safaris are conducted twice daily- morning and evening. The morning safari starts around 6 AM ( changes with season depending on sunrise) and lasts for up to 3.00- 3.50 hours. Packed breakfast is provided to guests going on morning safari which can be eaten at a designated area inside the park during safari hours. The duration of the evening safari is 3.00- 3.30 hours again depending on sunset.

Walking Safaris: Satpura National Park also offers walking safaris on guided trails in the buffer zone. The guests are accompanied by a naturalist and a forest guard, learning about the flora and fauna of Satpura. The Walking safari is a welcome break from the tiring jeep safaris.

Boat Safari: Boat or Canoe rides are also offered on the Denwa River at Satpura Tiger Reserve.
