Once the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur, the park was known for its dense wildlife and royal tiger hunts during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The decline in the tiger population led to increased conservation efforts, and in 1955, Ranthambore was declared a wildlife sanctuary.

In 1973, Ranthambore became part of Project Tiger, a national initiative to protect India’s dwindling tiger population. The park was officially declared a national park in 1980, and its boundaries were extended with the inclusion of the Sawai Mansingh Sanctuary and Keladevi Sanctuary.
